Discernment: How To Know It’s Really Spirit You’re Hearing
Below is an excerpt from my eBook, The Medium’s Toolkit.
The ability to hear Spirits is called clairaudience.
Most mediums communicate with Spirits by talking to them. You can talk to a Spirit inside your mind and they will reply, inside your mind. This is called mental mediumship.
Until the early 1900s, when charlatans, posing as mediums, were trying to discredit actual mediums, mediumship was primarily made up of physical mediumship - bangs, knocking noises, light shows - and it was very entertaining.
To combat this and continue to prove life after death, mediums switched to asking for verbal evidence instead, and translating Spirit’s verbal messages has been the primary form of mediumship ever since.
While hearing Spirits externally is part of physical mediumship, today, it is more common for a Spirit to communicate with you telepathically.
When you get close enough to the energy field of a Spirit, it is possible to transfer thoughts between you and them. This is true whether you’re connecting with a Deceased Loved One, Spirit Guide or Angel.
If a Spirit comes close enough into your energetic space, they can transmit their thoughts, through words and messages that arrive spontaneously in your mind.
The best way to begin hearing a Spirit is to:
Clear your energy with three deep breaths
Visualize a channel of Divine Light next to you
Ask a Spirit present to step into this channel of Light
Internally, with your thoughts, ask them a question
Notice what thoughts or words effortlessly pop into your head in response
It’s really that easy!
However, when you’re first learning mediumship, you may have a difficult time trusting that what you are hearing in your mental mediumship practice is real.
Over time, with validation and years of experience, this doubt goes away, but in the beginning, there are a few ways you can discern that the thoughts you’re hearing in response aren’t something you totally made up.
How do you know if it’s really Spirit you are hearing?
Here are some tips to tell you’re receiving a real Spiritual Message:
When what you ‘get’ surprises you
When you ask a Spirit a question, and wait for a reply inside your mind, some of the things you hear will not match what you expected you would hear.
If it surprises you, it is usually a solid sign it didn’t come from your own thoughts.
The voice is not like your own
Notice tempo changes, pitch, phrasing or chosen analogies, and small nuances in what you hear. Some Spirits are more curt than you might be.
If these messages sound different from your own voice, it is likely a Spirit voice.
It’s coming ‘in’ on a certain side
You can ask a Spirit speaking to you to stand on one side of your body versus another. I prefer to ask the Spirit to stand over my left shoulder so when I hear words coming into my mind from that side, I know it’s their message.
Simply asking the Spirit you’re communicating with to give you the information by whispering it through a certain ear can help sort out where the thoughts, messages and information are coming from.
Unless you’re communicating with a Demonic entity or an Earthbound Spirit, Spirit Messages are never mean or harassing. They’re typically lovingly neutral or positive, and often relevant to the situation at hand, as they’re aware of what’s happening on Earth.
If you’re concerned that whoever you’re talking to is not “in the light,” simply clear your energy and the energy on the property, then start over. I also like to set the intention before I connect that only Spirits supporting the highest and greatest good of all present be allowed to come through.
